Friendships are…

As we grow and develop, we need friends. We need friendships to teach us about life and love, emotions and struggles, compassion and grace!

Teach your children to develop the skill of recognizing character. You can, and probably will have the opportunity to teach your children about character traits when they enter daycare, preschool or any social gathering of your children. Even family/cousins can provide the opportunity to talk with your children about character.

Here's a more detailed look at some key characteristics of strong friendships:

Core Qualities:

  • Trustworthiness: to rely on your friend to keep confidence, honor commitments, and be honest.

  • Honesty: open and honest communication.

  • Empathy: true friends can understand and share the feelings of others, offering support and comfort during difficult times.

  • Respect: respecting your friend's opinions, boundaries, and individuality.

  • Loyalty: being a loyal friend means standing by your friend, even when they make mistakes or face challenges.

Other Important Qualities:

  • Good Listener: listens to your thoughts and feelings, offering a supportive ear and understanding.

  • Supportiveness: offer encouragement and help when needed, both in good times and bad.

  • Openness: open and willing to share your thoughts and feelings.

  • Interaction: regularly spending time together, whether through conversations, activities, or simply being present.

  • Forgiveness: friendships are not always perfect, and it's important to be willing to forgive each other's mistakes.

  • Fun to be around: enjoy spending time with someone who makes you laugh and brightens your day.

  • Dependability: follows through with what they say they will do, and is someone you can count on.

  • Self-confidence: self-confident individuals make the best friends because they reach out to others not because of their emotional or psychological deficits, but rather as an overflow of their blessings.
