Power in Communication
Happy Fourth of July!
Since 1776 to our present day, we have been celebrating the birth of American Independence. Even though John Adams believed the date was really July 2nd, we have named July 4th as the day we bring out the fireworks along with family traditions of parades, concerts, family gatherings and barbecues.
In January of 1776, Thomas Paine wrote a 47 page pamphlet “Common Sense”. It was published in Philadelphia and it is estimated that over 500,000 copies went viral in an age of no internet. That is pretty substantial in my humble opinion. Thomas made critical arguments in the effort to gain our independence from England. His writing expressed strong criticism on the controversial opinions against the injustice of rule by a king and also wrote eloquently that we,
“Americans had a unique opportunity to change the course of history by creating a new sort of government in which people were free and had the power to rule themselves.”
This little pamphlet took colonial America by storm.
“We have every opportunity and every encouragement before us, to form the noblest purest constitution on the face of the earth,” Paine wrote. “We have it in our power to begin the world over again.”
I just wanted to share a little history and thankfulness…along with a little hope!
“American exceptionalism and the need to form a new nation to realize its promise.”
-Thomas Paine
